What the cases mean for anyone selling data

The money in these cases flows from AI companies to the people whose work was taken without a licence. One settlement came to about $3,000 per book. That is why labs now prefer data with a clear rights holder, and why a seller who can document rights is worth more to them.

Courts have also looked through rewritten or derived data to its source: paying someone to rewrite material you could not license did not clean the rights. Owning the files is not the same as holding the right to license them.
