Stock agencies settle AI training consent in four different ways: opt-out, opt-in, no choice, or not selling at all
Shutterstock includes contributors by default and lets them opt out of future datasets (about 1 percent had, its head of data licensing told VentureBeat in December 2024); Canva also includes stock media by default and ends the Magic Creators Payment for anyone who opts out. Alamy licenses for machine learning only through its opt-in Novel Use scheme, which can be left only in April. Adobe offers no opt-out, and EyeEm made uploading itself the grant. Freepik trained its own model on about 80 million images from its library with no contributor opt-in named on the model card. Photobucket, which discussed selling user photos for AI in 2024, now says it does not sell them for training.

“Yes, in January 2023 we have added an option in the contributor account settings that allows you to opt out of having your content included in future datasets. In August 2024 we are modifying the control settings to allow contributors to have separate toggles for image and video data licensing.”
